Unconscious Archives @ Supernormal Festival, 8th-10th Aug 2014

Unconscious Archives is going to Supernormal!

Supernormal is a festival like no other, providing a powerful antidote to the current malaise of festivals-as-big-business. Blurring the boundaries between art and music, performer and audience, it champions the iconoclastic and the experimental, allowing risks to be taken and leaps of imagination to occur.

Sculpture is an opto-musical agglomerate made up of Dan Hayhurst (music), and Reuben Sutherland (animation). Their first test hit upon a psychedelic palette, the sensorial intricacies of which they continue to explore. Performance is central to their work, and feeds back into all aspects of the process. Sculpture’s output includes music, film and video work, and multi-sensory live shows.

Primitives is a performance based opti-sonic installation from Spatial that uses custom made, home coded software to explore sonic and optical intensity articulated by simple geometric figures and extreme frequencies. Projected images drive a sensory assault, consumed by your eyes, then ears and existing somewhere between perceptions.

James’ work fuses improvisatory techniques in the mechanics of clockwork movie cameras with the limitless possibilities inherent in the darkroom and through expanded projection. For Supernormal 2014 James presents an iteration of a recent piece Hair in the Gate, which takes as it’s departure point the removal of a hair from a projector gate during live projection, exploiting to an absurdist degree the hitherto hidden ways in which a projectionist would do this. Expect burning hair and gobbets of spit dancing a duet on screen in glorious smell-o-vision.

Sally Golding combines film projection with performance and installation. She has developed works where she projects films directly onto her body and harnesses the audience’s reflections, creating live cine-sculptures and interactions. Producing works that thread between expanded cinema and media art, curation and audiovisual archiving, Sally creates compositions from printed optical sound and vinyl library music resulting in strained sonorousness.
