Sound and Music Embedded residency with South London Gallery 2015

From Spring 2015-2016 artists Sally Golding and Sarah Hughes will take up concurrent Embedded residencies at the SLG, in partnership with Sound and Music. The residency programme is aimed at composers at an early stage in their career, providing a professional development opportunity, offering support and space to explore creative ideas and compositional practice, as well as gaining experience in producing and presenting new work.

During their 12 month residency Golding and Hughes are given the opportunity to draw upon the SLG’s existing relationships with neighbouring housing estates, schools, institutions and individuals, to explore the sonic properties of the area, or develop responses to shared spaces and experiences found within Camberwell and Peckham.

Biographies:

Sally Golding is an Australian-British multimedia artist combining film projection, lighting and sonic composition to create expanded cinema performances and participatory installations. Golding’s audiovisual performance work focuses on the experience of the audience, pushing the boundaries of visual and auditory perception through the breakdown of the cinematic system into flicker, waveforms and colour fields; while her installations have harnessed the presence of the audience themselves by incorporating their reflected image into projections within immersive spaces.

Sally has performed for major sound art and audiovisual festivals and venues including Tate Britain, Digital Culture Centre, Mexico City, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Sound of Stockholm, Fylkingen Festival, Sweden, BEAM: Brunel Electronic & Analogue Music Festival, London, Kraak, Belgium, Colour Out of Space, Brighton, Sonica, Slovenia, Open Frame, Brisbane, FlexFest, Florida, Supernormal, UK, Edinburgh International Film Festival, San Francisco Cinematheque, Abandon Normal Devices, Manchester, Oslo Cinemateket, Norway, and Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

Through the curatorial outlets of Unconscious Archives and OtherFilm, Golding presents live audiovisual and sound art performance as a means of examining: ‘liveness’; the synaesthetic concerns of audiovisual art; and the contemporary role of the audience.

Sarah Hughes is a British artist, composer and performer, producing work that explores the boundaries of interdisciplinary practice, often moving between sculpture, installation, composition and music. Hughes is the co-founder of Compost and Height, a curatorial platform that focuses on new music and composition. She is also co-editor of the new music journal, Wolf Notes, and co-founder of BORE, a publication dedicated to experimental text-based and graphic scores.

Hughes’s work has been exhibited and performed internationally, including at Supplement, London; V22, London; Sydney Non Objective, Australia; Oriel Davies, Wales; Center for New Music, San Francisco; Constellation, Chicago and The Wulf, Los Angeles.

Embedded is a Sound and Music composer and creative artist development programme funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
