About

Sally Golding is an Australian-British interdisciplinary artist based in Kamberri/Canberra, working across immersive audiovisual performances, participatory installations, sound art, and creative-critical writing. Her practice explores how audiovisual art can foster shared experiences and dialogues by subverting media communication technologies, combining her interest in perception and phenomenology to create experiences which activate and enliven spaces.

Golding’s work examines states of reality and challenges narrative structures, using sonic and visual fragments to rework the essential elements of audiovisual media—light, substrate, and amplification—into compositions that provoke new ways of perceiving.

Drawing from her background in expanded cinema and avant-garde music, Golding creates powerful sensory performances and interactive installations that bridge technology and folklore. Her works intervene in social spaces such as galleries, cinemas and clubs, centering the viewer’s experience and inviting them to engage with compositions that challenge the boundaries of perception and threshold.

Golding is an inaugural recipient of the Oram Award (New BBC Radiophonic Workshop/PRS Foundation) for women innovating in sound and creative technologies, and rostered for the prestigious SHAPE platform, celebrating innovative music and audiovisual art in Europe. Golding’s work has been recognised in publications including Oxford University Press, Tate Modern, Palgrave Macmillan, I.B Tauris/Bloomsbury, Millennium Film Journal, Senses of Cinema, and The Wire.

Exhibitions and performances highlights include Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Serralves Museum (PT), Digital Culture Centre (MX), Museum of the Moving Image (USA), CA2M: Contemporary Art Madrid, Whitstable Biennale (UK), Metro Arts (AU), Institute of Modern Art (AU), Sound of Stockholm, Abandon Normal Devices (UK), San Francisco Cinematheque, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Contemporary Art Centre (LT), Audiograft (UK), International Film Festival Rotterdam, Contemporary Art Tasmania, South London Gallery, and Tromsø Center for Contemporary Art (NO).

Golding also co-founded OtherFilm (AU) and Unconscious Archives (UK), curating hundreds of boundary-pushing programs across moving image, sound, and digital art. She is the author of Parsing Digital: Conversations in Digital Art by Practitioners and Curators (Austrian Cultural Forum London).
